Willamette Valley Wine Tasting

The Willamette Valley is America's premier Pinot Noir region — a long, cool growing season in the rain shadow of the Coast Range produces silky, complex reds that rival Burgundy. The valley stretches from Portland south through Salem, Corvallis and Eugene, making it a natural companion to any university town visit.

  • Dundee Hills — Oregon's most famous wine appellation
  • Eola-Amity Hills — windswept vineyards with Pacific influence
  • Chehalem Mountains — closest to Portland; easy day trip
  • Pinot Gris & Chardonnay — white wines gaining acclaim fast
  • Oregon Wine Country Passport — discounted tasting circuit

Tip: Many Willamette Valley wineries are open weekends only — book ahead for harvest season (Sept–Oct).

Oregon: America’s Craft Beer Capital

Oregon has more craft breweries per capita than any other US state. Portland alone has over 70 brewpubs — earning it the nickname "Beervana." The Whiteaker neighborhood in Eugene and downtown Corvallis are both exceptional brewery districts, conveniently located near their respective university campuses.

  • Deschutes Brewery (Bend & Portland) — Oregon institution, Black Butte Porter
  • Breakside Brewery (Portland) — multi-award IPA innovators
  • Ninkasi Brewing (Eugene) — the Ducks' favorite pint
  • Block 15 Brewing (Corvallis) — campus-adjacent & excellent
  • Rogue Ales (Newport) — taste it at the coastal brewery itself

☕ Coffee Culture

Portland & Oregon Coffee

Portland's coffee culture is as deeply ingrained as its food scene. Oregon is home to some of the nation's most respected specialty roasters — Stumptown, Heart, Water Avenue, and Coava among them. University towns have embraced this culture fully: every campus neighborhood has at least one exceptional independent café.

  • Stumptown Coffee Roasters — Portland's legendary original
  • Heart Roasters — precision specialty coffee; two PDX locations
  • Coava Coffee (Portland) — stunning refurbished gymnasium space
  • The Wandering Goat (Eugene) — beloved by UO students & faculty
  • New Morning Bakery (Corvallis) — the OSU crowd's favorite morning stop

Fresh from Oregon’s Coast & Farms

Oregon's 363-mile coastline delivers Dungeness crab, Pacific oysters, Chinook salmon and halibut straight from the ocean. The Willamette Valley's rich farmland supplies hazelnuts, Marion berries, artisan cheeses and seasonal vegetables to restaurant kitchens across the state.

  • Dungeness Crab — season Dec–Aug; best at Astoria or Newport docks
  • Pacific Oysters — Netarts Bay, Tillamook, Willapa Bay
  • Chinook Salmon — smoked, grilled or cured at Portland restaurants
  • Hazelnuts — Oregon grows 99% of the US hazelnut crop
  • Marionberry Pie — a true Oregon original; try it warm with local cream
